Ecco, qui le cose si fanno più complicate, non tanto per il viaggio in sé, che resta comunque piuttosto abbordabile, quanto per la quantità di foto che mi ritrovo a scattare e a gestire… infatti, come vedi, ho rallentato decisamente i tempi di pubblicazione.

Well, here things get more complicated, not much for the journey itself, which is still quite affordable, but for the amount of pictures that I do and to manage it… in fact, as you see, I slowed down my times of posting.

 

Ma andiamo con ordine. Ho lasciato Jaffna in treno e questa volta ho deciso per la seconda classe, così, per provare. Direzione Anuradhapura.

Anyway, step by step. I left Jaffna by train and this time I decided for the second class,  just to try. Direction Anuradhapura.

 

Anuradhapura… ci ho messo tre giorni a ricordarmi come si chiamava questa città… beh, si tratta di una della città con più templi e rovine storiche del paese. Da qui mi avvicino al centro dello Sri Lanka, ricco di luoghi che richiederanno più impegno ma che daranno anche più “soddisfazioni” ed emozioni.

Anuradhapura … it took me three days to remember that name… well, it is the city with the majority of temples and historical ruins of the country. From here I start to get close to the center of Sri Lanka, rich of places that require more efforts but that will also give more “satisfaction” and emotions.

 

Il viaggio è stato ottimo ed economico. In seconda classe si fa comunque un normalissimo viaggio in treno, con la possibilità di accendere anche dei ventilatori (più che sufficienti). In realtà, quella che potrebbe essere un’esperienza ben più intesa, dovrebbe essere al terza classe… va beh, vedremo.

The trip went fine and cheap. In the second class is like an ordinary train, with fans (more than enough). Actually, what should be more “interesting”, is the third class… we’ll see.

 

Arrivato ad Anuradhapura un tuk tuk mi ha portato in un hotel piuttosto economico, immerso in un parco con resti di un tempio e luoghi di meditazione… ovviamente appena ho potuto ci ho fatto un giro. Qui ho incontrato un gruppo di singalesi con una bambina, Kavisa; ho chiesto di fare alcune foto e la mamma mi ha detto che era una danzatrice, quindi ha fatto partire una canzone tipica dal cellulare e la bambina ha iniziato a danzare in stile indiano. Affascinante. Volevo mandargli le foto ma, invece di darmi l’indirizzo e-mail, mi hanno dato quello di casa.

Arrived at Anuradhapura a tuk tuk took me to an hotel quite cheap, surrounded by a park with the remains of a temple and places of meditation… obviously I’ve been there. Here I met a group of Sinhalese with a little girl, Kavisa; I asked for some photos and the mom told me that she was a dancer, so she play a typical song from the phone and the little girl began to dance in Indian style. Fascinating. I wanted to send them pictures but, instead of giving me the e-mail, they gave me home address.

Finito di vedere il parco, ho fatto un giro in città e qui, non essendo né molto bazzicata dai turisti né una grande cittadina, le persone si fanno fotografare volentieri, spesso chiedendoti loro di farlo.

Finished with the park, I took a tour in the city and here, being neither very busy of tourists or a large town, people are happy to be photographed, often they ask to have a picture.

I siti archeologici e religiosi da visitare, invece, sono venti, quindi per vederli tutti richiedono una giornata. Io ho “approfittato” del tuk tuk che mi aveva portato in hotel: gli ho chiesto di accompagnarmi il giorno seguente e di essere paziente perché i miei tempi, date le fotografie, sarebbero stati lunghi. Ovviamente ha accettato.

The archeological and religious sites to visit, however, are twenty, so to see them all, you need a day. I have “taken advantage” of the tuk tuk that had brought me to the hotel: I asked him to bring me the next day and be patient because I need to take photographs. He obviously accepted.

 

Mattina dopo, partenza ore 7.00, arrivo a casa ore 18.00, stancante è dir poco… mi sono stufato di me stesso e della quantità di fotografie fatte… inoltre, visto che la mattina avevo scordato di mettermi la crema solare, mi sono scottato il collo. Bravo.

Next morning, leaving at 7.00, arriving home at 18.00, tiring is an euphemism… I get tired of myself because of the amount of photographs taken… also, since the morning I forgot to put sunscreen, I got sunburn my neck. Bravo.

 

Diciamo che, siccome l’autista e l’inglese non andavano molto d’accordo, non è che ora abbia una gran cultura della storia singalese o del buddismo: quando spiegava, usava parole inventate con una radice più singalese che del Regno Unito… poi, quando vedeva che non capivo, mi diceva sempre “meditation, do you know meditation?”… si, I know meditation, è il resto che non mi è chiaro… va beh, diciamo che ho visto molte cose interessanti 😉

The driver and English were not going very well, so now I don’t have a great culture of the history of Buddhism or Sinhala: when he was explaining, he was inventing words similar to Sinhalese… then every time he saw that I did not understand, he always said “meditation, do you know meditation?”… yes, I know meditation, but the rest is not clear… okay, let’s say that I saw many interesting things 😉

 

Quello che posso dirti, ma non lo so grazie all’autista, è che i templi buddisti hanno questa forma perché se tu prendessi in mano una delle foglie dell’albero sotto cui pregava Buddha (Ficus religiosa) e la piegassi a metà, vedresti proprio questa forma a cupola. Al loro interno, di solito, contengono qualche reliquia e/o la statua di Buddha. Cosa molto importante, inoltre, è non dimenticare che il Buddhismo non è una vera e propria religione è una filosofia di vita. Tutto quel che è legato al Buddhismo ha per me e per molti altri occidentali che conosco, un aura di fascino mistico.

What I can tell you, but not because of the driver, is that Buddhist temples have this shape because if you take a leave of the kind of tree where Buddha prayed (Ficus religiosa) and you bend it in half, you would see the dome shape. They usually contain some relic and/or the Buddha statue. Very important, is also that Buddhism is not a religion, it is a philosophy of life. All what is related to Buddhism has for me and for many other Westerners I know, an aura of mystical charm.
