From the italian site of Lonely Planet we read “between the places on the Gulf, Doha has the uninvidbaile reputation of one of the most annoying place of all the World”.

Stando al sito di Lonely Planet: “Tra le località che si affacciano sul Golfo, Doha ha guadagnato la non invidiabile reputazione di essere uno dei posti più monotoni sulla faccia della terra”.

They are right, but I choose a stop of more than 20 hours here… why?

Non gli si può dar torto, ma sta di fatto che ho scelto una sosta di 20 ore abbondanti qui… perché?

Have you ever flight during the night? If all the internal light are switch off and you look outside, you’ll see millions of stars. I was impressed by that and I would like to make a picture.

Hai mai volato di notte? Se tutte le luci interne sono spente e guardi fuori vedrai una miriade di stelle. Io ne rimasi affascinato e volevo fotografarle.

So I choose the desert: a night in the desert of Sahara for photograph stars and sunrise.

Allora ho pensato bene di optare per il deserto: una notte nel deserto del Sahara per fotografare le stelle e l’alba.

I write to many travel agency, but the only one that propose me a good tour was the “Gulf Adventures”, so I suggest it.

L’unica agenzia turistica che sia riuscita a propormi un tour fattibile è stata la “Gulf Adventures”, quindi te la consiglio.

The option “stars”, unfortunately, has faded away in Venice: for security reason is not allowed to bring a tripod of 2 kg on the airplane. Photograph stars without a tripod is an utopia. 

L’opzione “stelle”, però, mi è saltata già a Venezia: per questioni di sicurezza non è consentito avere un cavalletto del peso di 2 kg come bagaglio a mano. Fotografare le stelle senza cavalletto è pura utopia.

At the arrival in Doha I meet Waseem, my driver: a guy of 30 with the look a bit slow. Is from Pakistan, with 2 wife but no child. He is one of the few that answer me “yes, I like Doha”. I asked that to about 100 people emigrate in Doha for find a work;  I can count on a hand’s finger who answer me so (without use them all).

All’arrivo a Doha incontro Waseem, il mio autista: un ragazzo di 30 con lo sguardo un po’ spento. È di origini pachistane, con 2 mogli ma senza figli. Lui è uno dei pochi che mi risponde “si, mi piace Doha”. L’ho chiesto a un centinaio di persone emigrate a Doha per cercare lavoro; chi mi hanno risposto così lo conto sulle dita di una mano (senza consumarle tutte).

During the trip to the overnight camp, we pass close to the gas and petrol station: look like a city, all lightly and always producing.

Durante la strada per il campo dove pernotteremo, passiamo vicino agli oleodotti e le stazioni di pompaggio del petrolio: sembrano delle vere e proprie città, tutte illuminate e sempre intente a produrre.

We enter in the Sahara. “Is hard to drive in the desert?” he look at me, smile, and answer “yes, especially at night: is all dark”, then he turn off the light and continuing to drive. So, it was like lose the look for a few minutes: nothing, absolute zero. But he know the streets at memory…

Entriamo nel Sahara. “È difficile guidare nel deserto?” mi guarda, sorride, mi risponde “si… soprattutto la notte: non si vede nulla”, poi spegne le luci dell’auto e continua a guidare. Ecco, è stato come perdere la vista per alcuni minuti: il nulla, zero assoluto. Ma lui le strade le conosce a memoria…

Slept 4 hours, I wake for “enjoy” the sunrise. Unfortunately even the sunrise has fade away: too much humidity.

Dormo 4 ore e mi alzo per “guastarmi” la tanto ambita alba. Purtroppo anche questa salta: troppa foschia.

Lasciamo stare…

After breakfast Waseem come out, that time with a particular dress style: green blue shorter, yellow bad-plastic boots, amber mirror sunglasses and a blu sweatshirt with the hood on.  

Dopo colazione ricompare Waseem, questa volta con un vestiario degno di nota: un paio di calzoncini corti verde acqua, stivalacci di pseudo plastica giallognoli, occhiali a specchio tendenti all’ambra e felpa blu con il cappuccio rigorosamente tirato su.

Except the dress style, when will get on the dunes he show all his ability driving in the desert.

Vestiario a parte, però, viaggiando tra le dune, diventa evidente la sua abilità tecnica.

The desert panorama is different from what I thought: there are natural flat area alternate to dunes area: we are near the see. Waseem explain to me that nobody live in the desert, just some family spend the week-end here: “they like the desert”… is like our see or mountain week-end

Il panorama del deserto è diverso da ciò che mi aspettavo: zone naturalmente piatte si alternano alle classiche dune: siamo vicino al mare. Waseem mi spiega che nessuno vive in pianta stabile nel deserto, solo alcune famiglie passano dei week-end qui: “gli piace il deserto”… è come il nostro fine settimana in montagna o al mare.

To be honest, about emotions, the desert wasn’t so special.

Non posso negare, però, che di emozioni, il deserto, me ne abbia date poche.

Ended of the tour, at the airport, I understand that there is no baggage deposit.

Terminato il tour, all’aeroporto, scopro che non esiste il deposito bagagli.

Take a taxi.

Prendo un taxi.

In Doha there are 2 principal tariffs for authorized taxi: 1 and 0. The second one is a fake.

A Doha esistono 2 tariffe principali per i taxi autorizzati: 1 e 0. La seconda è una fregatura.

For escape it, is a good rule to use some “tricks” for ask the driver to change tariff. Is not hard: mine, normally, is “I had work for 3 years in Qatar Airways”  or “I’m a Al Jazeera Photo-reporter”

Per evitarla, è bene inventarsi qualche escamotage per dire al tassista di cambiarla. Non è difficile: il mio, normalmente, è “ho lavorato 3 anni come steward nella Qatar Airways?” oppure “come fotoreporter per Al Jazeera”.

Roni, from Bangladesh, bring me to some free toilet and shower where I can wash and  change; then, at the City Center (one of the principal malls of Doha), with the excuse to shop, I left the baggage at the Carrefour.

Roni, originario del Bangladesh, mi accompagna a dei bagni gratuiti dove potermi lavare e cambiare; poi, al City Center (uno dei principali centri commerciali di Doha) con la scusa di fare spesa, affibbio i miei bagagli ai responsabili del Carrefour.

In fact, I took another taxi and I’ve gone to Al Souq, the old town (with the Corniche – the promenade -, the museums and the malls, is the principal attractive), the only place with some authentic pieces of Doha.

In realtà, infatti, mi sono fiondato con un altro taxi ad Al Souq, la città vecchia (insieme al Corniche – il lungomare -, i musei e i centri commerciali, è l’attrattiva principale), unico luogo dove ancora si possono scorgere dei frammenti di autenticità.

At my return from Philippines I’ll have a stop of 10 hrs in Doha, while I’ll try different bar that some hostess of the Qatar airways suggested to me. We’ll see if is really an annoying city at all.

Al mio ritorno dalle Filippine avrò una sosta di 10 ore a Doha, durante la quale sperimenterò una lista di bar che mi sono fatto consigliare da alcune hostess della Qatar Airways. Vediamo se è veramente noiosa in tutto e per tutto.
