Boracay… the most touristic place in the Philippines. Why did I get here? A mistake: I found out after booking that “the island of white beaches” is also “the island of tourism, confusion and prices are quite high”. But now I “had” to go, so might see this place and draw my conclusions.

Boracay… il luogo più turistico delle Filippine. Perché mai sono finito qui? Un errore: ho scoperto dopo aver prenotato che “l’isola dalle spiagge bianche” è anche “l’isola del turismo, della confusione e dei prezzi piuttosto alti”. Ma ormai ci “dovevo” andare, quindi tanto valeva vedere questo luogo così turistico e trarne le mie conclusioni.

Upon arriving, the first impression was not very different from all the info about it: massive groups of tourists that roam the streets and beaches of the small island (9 km long and 1 km wide). The roads are not like the rest of the Philippines: here arereminiscent of our Jesolo stalls and restaurants have nearly all of a mold by large chains globalized (a nice exception are restaurantsnear the market where you can buy yourself the fish and then let them how to cook more delightest). They have a very good tourist organization: they are used to manage the tourists.

Appena arrivato, la prima impressione h combaciato con le informazioni che avevo ricevuto: massicci gruppi di turisti che scorrazzano per le strade e le spiagge della piccola isola (9 km di lunghezza e 1 km di larghezza). Le strade non sono come nel resto delle Filippine: qui ci sono bancarelle che ricordano la nostra Jesolo e i ristoranti hanno quasi tutti uno stampo da grandi catene globalizzate (una bella eccezione sono i ristoranti vicino al mercato, dove puoi comprare personalmente il pesce e poi fartelo cuocere come più gradisci). Ciò che noti subito è un’organizzazione turistica ben diversa dal solito: sono abituati a gestire i turisti.

The famous sandy beaches, however, more than whites, are a mix of pink, yellow, light brown … all skin tones of tourists that can find in the Philippines. But here the majority is Korean and mostly Filipino (also because it is approaching the period of their absence).

Le famose spiagge, però, più che bianche, sono un mix di rosa, giallo, marrone chiaro… tutte le carnagioni dei turisti che puoi trovare nelle Filippine. Ma qui la maggioranza è coreana e soprattutto filippina (anche perché si avvicina il periodo delle loro ferie).

There is everything on this island and all activities are tourist mold: souvenirs, ATV, motorbikes, banana, water ski, Island Hopping (island tour) and many other services that are sold on the street or in travel agencies. The prices, as against, are not cheap at all: on average, there is at least 50% more.

C’è di tutto su quest’isola e tutte le attività sono a stampo turistico: souvenir, Quad, motociclette, banana, sci nautico, Island Hopping (tour dell’isola) e tanti altri servizi che ti vengono venduti per strada o nelle agenzie turistiche. I prezzi, come contro, non scherzano affatto: in media, qui c’è almeno un 50% in più.

My days in Boracay, however, have not been marked by the sun. So I took the opportunity to see some other ways.

Le mie giornate a Boracay, però, non sono state segnate dal sole. Così ne ho approfittato per vedere un po’ altre vie.

As been, even, a sunny sunset.

Non è mancato, comunque, un tramonto soleggiato.

Here in not easy to get away from foreigners: there are plenty. In addition, there are virtually no “native”  of Boracay: 95% of Filipinos who work here are boys and girls come from all over the Philippines to find a good job.

Qui non è facile scampare ai forestieri: ce ne sono un’infinità. Inoltre, praticamente non ci sono “nativi” di Boracay: il 95% dei filippini che lavora qui sono ragazzi e ragazze venuti da tutte le Filippine per trovare un buon lavoro.

However I hold friendship with some committed (among others, most of the clerks are gay – it is probably considered a women’s work – but being gay is not marked by stereotypes here in the Philippines: they live very normally and fluency). Talking Tagalog is a godsend: I know a few phrases and about fifty words in total, but people melt when you hear something in their own language: no one expecting that. Even if you say only “Magandang Umanga” (good morning), the eyes wide open and smile rises surprised.

Comunque stringo amicizia con alcuni commessi e commesse (tra l’altro, a maggior parte dei commessi è gay – probabilmente è considerato un lavoro femminile – ma l’esser gay non è segnato da stereotipi qui nelle Filippine: lo vivono con estrema normalità e scioltezza). Parlare Tagalog è una manna: so solo poche frasi e una cinquantina di parole in totale, ma la gente si scioglie quando ti sente dire qualcosa nella loro lingua: non se lo aspetta nessuno. Anche se dici solo “Magandang Umanga” (buon giorno), gli occhi si sgranano e nasce un sorriso sorpreso.

With this story of Tagalog, a masseuse gave me a super discount price. Although massage in the Philippines are not as common in Thailand, here in Boracay, there are plenty. Wonderful, nothing to say.

Con questa storia del Tagalog, ho avuto anche un prezzaccio da una massaggiatrice. Anche se nelle Filippine non sono diffusi come in Thailandia, qui a Boracay sono molto presenti. Meritano, nulla da dire.

But is harder to see the spontaneous, and involving Filipino’s smiles (even children see less astonishment): tourism effect disturb… people are almost tired of seeing strangers… is more or less what happens to us in Italy: it seems almost disturbing. But after a while of Tagalog, jokes and smiles, everything returns to normal.

Si fa più fatica, però, a vedere i sorrisi spontanei e coinvolgenti dei filippini (anche dai bambini vedi meno stupore): colpa del famoso effetto turismo… la gente è quasi stufa di vedere forestieri… è più o meno quello che succede a noi in Italia a furia di vedere turisti: sembra quasi ci disturbino. Però dopo un po’ di Tagalog, scherzi e sorrisi, tutto torna alla normalità.

The evening will be on stage. As in Manila, but here in great and it’s another story: bar, live music, discos on the beach, happy hour and alcohol are the boss. 

La sera si va in scena. Come a Manila, ma qui in grande ed è tutta un’altra musica: bar, musica dal vivo, discoteche in spiaggia, happy hour e alcool la fanno da padrone.

Not to be missed, of course, prostitution: after 3 steps (as number) from the threshold of my hotel, I’m immediately joined by a “excuse me” a little ambiguous … it is a trans that is proposed for various services. The beach is full of them at night and a little less during the day. They are so insistent that you almost afraid to go into the darkest areas.

Non può mancare, ovviamente, la prostituzione: dopo 3 passi (di numero) dalla soglia del mio hotel vengono subito raggiunto da un “excuse me” un po’ ambiguo… infatti è un trans che si propone per servizi vari. La spiaggia ne è piena di sera e un po’ meno di giorno. Sono così insistenti che hai quasi paura a passare nelle zone più buie.

What I can say is that, despite the confusion, I still liked the place and people: the friendships that I made the place made me feel the place a bit more “mine”… same to El Nido.

Quel che posso dire è che, nonostante la grande confusione, comunque ho apprezzato il luogo e la gente: le amicizie che ho stretto mi hanno fatto sentire il luogo un po’ più mio, come ad El Nido.
