The cockfights are very popular in the Philippines. In El Nido are held every Sunday. They’re legal, you just get a license. The rulesare simple: 2 cocks in the middle of the arena, a living, not the other (alternative option, one of two runs). Obviously you can bet,the amazing thing is that all bets are made “in memory”: no one writes anything.

I combattimenti tra galli sono molto in voga nelle Filippine. Ad El Nido si svolgono ogni domenica. Sono legali, basta avere una licenza. Le regole sono semplici: 2 galli in mezzo all’arena, uno vive, l’altro no (opzione alternativa, uno dei due scappa). Ovviamente si può scommettere; la cosa stupefacente è che tutte le scommesse vengono prese “a memoria”: nessuno scrive nulla.

The place is extremely spartan, sand arena, a fence, three fairlypacked the stands and a little “bar”.

Il luogo è estremamente spartano; un’arena di sabbia, una rete di recinzione, tre spalti piuttosto zeppi e un “barettino”.

The atmosphere here is rather tense: not aspect to see the smiles and friendliness of the Filipinos to welcome you. Here are all tense and concentrated … and “quality” of these is not among the best.

L’atmosfera, qui, è piuttosto tesa: non trovi i sorrisi e la gentilezza dei filippini ad accoglierti. Qui sono tutti tesi e concentrati… e la “qualità” dei presenti non è tra le migliori.

The beginning of the fight consist in “to know” of the roosters. Held in hand until they start to get nervous. Then leave at the ground, they start to take a paid off and pecking.

L’inizio del combattimento consiste nel far “conoscere” i galli. Tenuti in mano finché non iniziano ad innervosirsi. Poi vengono lasciati al suolo. Iniziano a scontarsi e a prendersi a beccate.

At the beginning the roosters are frantic and snappy, but after a minute or so, the movements are slow, dragging their wings and begin to touch the ground that, meanwhile, is filled with feathers plucked each other.

All’inizio i galli sono frenetici e scattanti, ma dopo un minuto circa, i movimenti sono lenti, si trascinano e le loro ali cominciano a toccare il terreno che, intanto, si è riempito di piume strappate l’un altro.

Some times the roosters slump to the ground. When this happens, the referee brings them together and makes them start over.

Ogni tanto i galli si accasciano al suolo. Quando ciò accade, l’arbitro li raccoglie, li avvicina e li fa ricominciare.

A general shout decrees the end: one of the two no longer moving. The fight lasted no more than 2/3 minutes. All rise. Who sadly, those happy… but no longer takes care of the carcass of the loser. Today have been at least 7 or 8 fights, this was the last. After that have redistributed the money to the winners, some playing cards … of course with money.

Un urlo generale decreta la fine: uno dei due non si muove più. L’incontro è durato non più di 2/3 minuti. Tutti si alzano. Chi sconsolato, chi contento… ma nessuno si cura più della carcassa del perdente. Oggi ci saranno stati almeno 7 o 8 incontri, questo era l’ultimo. Dopo aver ridistribuito i soldi ai vincenti, alcuni giocano a carte… ovviamente a soldi.
